We offer historic interested club members the possibility to get seriously in touch with the Middle Age. Our priority is to (explore) investigate and represent the circumstances of live and historic-culture of the Middle Age in Austria. Due to the fact that the term Middle Age has a range of thousand years, we have decided to concentrate at the period of 1270 – 1320, exactly round 1300, which was the time of the first “Habsburger” in Austria.
In course of time this theme fascinated us – powered by the intention of giving an authentic impression of live in the Middle Age. We are trying to manufacture all objects and garments which we are using as authentic as possible from the tanned leather for the handmade shoes, the replicas for daily usage, weapons, armoury, to the handmade garments. To manage this task we get our knowledge from contemporary picture- and text sources, facts, opinion reports of founded objects – mainly from Austria. In this task we work together with archaeologists and historians of the University of Vienna and also with private collectors in an intense way.
We try to spread our knowledge during themes- or school arrangements and cooperate with domestic and foreign museums, publishers and publishing houses for education media. Loans were giving to the historic museum of Pfalz for the exhibition “Die Ritter” and to the Bergische Museum from the castle Burg in Germany.
One of our priorities is to give an authentic as possible overview of the everyday routine in the Middle Age, in which visitors - mainly children – should be involved. Beside the presentation from old technical skills, things for everyday live, weapons and armoury we are trying to give an overview of the living at that time for the modern people. The motto is “Living History” or so called in german “erlebbare Geschichte” – get in touch with history. Attention to the point that we are no exhibition figthing group.
We make heavy demands on our replicated and reconstructed objects to show off the quality and seriousness of our group and to distinguish us from similar – theatrical and carnival clubs. Another point of interest is the reconstruction of things for daily usage, weapons and armoury, which are a result of our extensive investigations for reproducing these things. Important is that the reproduced pieces are in form and of characteristically material and look as if the were original. For example the rings of our chain armoury are revited and our crossbows have real composite bows which are equivalent of the original efficiency. The ceramics are oxidized or reduced low burned. The clothes are partly made of hand weaved and naturally coloured linen or woollen material which are stitched by hand. We only use materials which were in usage in the Middle Age. Partly we refer to authentically manufacturing skills for the production of things for daily use. These techniques can be demonstrated to the visitors.
